Regional Chess Final
King's hosts regional chess final.
The school hosted a regional final for the Team Chess Challenge. This is a competition open to any British school with pupils in any of years 7 to 13. Each team taking part consists of four pupils. As hosts we were able to enter three teams.
In a regional final which included one of the powerhouses of schools’ chess, Nottingham High School, and the major public school Oundle, the King’s first team beat the latter and lost a tight match against the former. However, the vagaries of the pairing system meant that they finished behind both Notts HS and Oundle by the end of all the rounds. The King’s second team played well and beat Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School, Horncastle, and drew with Oundle and were unlucky to lose a tense match against the King’s first team 3-1. A youthful third team gained valuable match experience and although they lost all their games, there were some impressive individual performances which bodes well for the Regional Under 13 final to be played at King’s in March.
