King's Advance in Natwest Vase

King's School beat Carre's Grammar School 37-12

On an unusually warm mid-September afternoon, King’s opened their Natwest Cup campaign with a hard fought victory. King’s started the game in impressive fashion by scoring before a Carre’s player even had an opportunity to touch the ball! Lewis Wilby caught the kick off and, after good work by the forwards, Jacob Pearson crashed over to score from close range. In a game dominated by earth shattering tackles and physical brawn, the next score required subtlety, cunning and quick thinking. Harry Clough, a Year 11 pupil starting for the First XV for the first time, took a tap penalty quickly and ghosted through the defence for an excellent score just shy of the 20 minute mark. However, from this point Carre’s rallied together, growing into the game and scoring just before half time to make the score 14-7 at the break.

Carre’s started the second half brightly attacking with pace and power. King’s edged further ahead through a Ben Whinney penalty, but Carre’s pressure was finally rewarded with a try in the corner to make the score 17-12 to King’s. Game on. Seemingly unperturbed, this appeared to kick the King’s side into gear. Three quick scores through Jacob Pearson, Henry Parker and captain Noah Clegg put the game to bed with King’s running out 37-12. The score line doesn’t accurately reflect how close the game was throughout. Man of the Match was Ben Whinney who kicked 2 difficult penalties from over 40 metres in blustery conditions.

King’s will be hoping their cup dream continues for a little while longer when they face King’s School, Peterborough in the next round.
